The interaction may look like Luna is encouraging Loren to move away or spend less time nursing. This can resemble the early stages of weaning, although a single video cannot confirm exactly what Luna intends or whether she has begun a deliberate weaning process.
For Loren, nursing is more than a source of nutrition. Staying close to Mom can also be part of the comfort and security of being young. Luna’s actions may look surprising from a human perspective, but animal mothers often adjust their interactions as their babies mature. The bond does not disappear simply because nursing becomes less frequent.
